drop the puck for mental health

Every January, Beta Theta Pi at UBC proudly hosts our signature philanthropic event: Drop The Puck for Mental Health. In partnership with our friends at Phi Delta Theta, we organize a spirited ice hockey match that brings together the Greek community, UBC students, alumni, and local sponsors — all in support of a cause that deeply matters to us: mental health.

What started as a simple idea to combine our love for hockey with a mission to give back has grown into one of the largest and most anticipated student-run charity events at UBC. Since its inception, Drop The Puck has raised over $165,000 for the Canadian Mental Health Association, directly supporting mental health resources and outreach programs across British Columbia.

The event is more than just a game — it’s a statement.

At Beta Theta Pi, we recognize that mental health is one of the most pressing issues facing university students today. Many struggle in silence, unsure of where to turn or afraid to ask for help. Drop The Puck was born out of a desire to challenge that stigma and create space for open conversations, shared support, and community action. Each year, we see the stands filled with students, faculty, and families — not just to cheer on their friends, but to show that mental health matters, and that no one has to face it alone.

We're proud to work alongside committed community sponsors such as Body Energy Club, Yerba Mate, Freshslice Pizza, and Abbie’s Sports Shop, whose generous contributions help us take this event to the next level. From supplying refreshments to helping promote the cause, their support reinforces the power of collaboration in driving meaningful change.
